Drug-Free Workplace

The Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 required all federal grantees and some federal contractors to provide a drug-free workplace as a precondition to receiving federal grants. While requirements varied depending on the size of the organization, testing all new employees and re-testing existing employees (should any suspicion of abuse arise), applied to all.

Even though the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 ended in 2010, drug screening still remains as one of the best practices for ensuring a drug-free environment in your organization.

VSI, Leaders in the Drug Screening Industry

At VSI, our drug screening process includes:

  • Collection at patient service centers
  • Full chain of custody handling by laboratory personnel and appropriate electronic forms
  • Screening and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)
  • Testing for 5-10 categories of drugs including: amphetamines, cannabinoids (THC), cocaine, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP)

What Happens if the Donor Tests Positively?

If the person tests positive for any of the drugs being screened, the laboratory will verify results with a GC-MS (gas chromatography – mass spectrometry) confirmation test, which is virtually 100% accurate.

Upon a positive result from the GC-MS, the lab will then advise the medical review officer, who has five days to contact the donor and the employer. The employer then has five days to contact the donor in writing in regards to the results.

Why Perform Drug Tests?

For many industries, drug use can impact the safety of the employee under the influence and all of those around them. Drug users tend to display behaviors that may disrupt business flow and routine. Some of these behaviors may include absenteeism, paranoia, and/or improper hygiene. Providing a drug-free work zone through proper testing can help your organization avoid potential issues associated with employee drug abuse.

At VSI, we take the drug screening process seriously, with accuracy being the utmost priority for you as an employer and for the donor as well. For more information on how drug screens with VSI can protect your company and your employees, please call us today at 800-809-7732.
